MLA Jayaram Mahato faces action for flouting campaign norms

Jamshedpur: Dumri MLA Jayaram Mahato has landed in legal trouble for allegedly violating election campaign norms during the Ghatshila bypoll. The controversy stems from his act of sitting atop a Scorpio vehicle while engaging in public outreach, a move that election officials say breaches established security protocols.

Sharing details on social media, the Jamshedpur Deputy Commissioner stated that during a rally in the Ghatshila Assembly constituency, a political figure was seen either sitting or standing on top of a four-wheeler, which is a clear violation of election safety guidelines.

The district administration has issued a notice through the returning officer to the concerned political party or candidate, demanding a written explanation within 24 hours. If the response is deemed unsatisfactory or is not submitted within the stipulated time, the administration has warned that legal action will follow in accordance with the Model Code of Conduct.

As per Election Commission regulations, no individual is allowed to stand or sit on top of campaign vehicles during rallies, as it poses a risk to both public safety and law and order.

The matter now awaits a formal response from Jayaram Mahato or his party. All eyes are on the administration’s next steps if the explanation fails to justify the violation.
