Maternal Death After Childbirth Sparks Protest at Sarwan CHC; Two ANMs Relieved of Labour Room Duties

Deoghar: A maternal death following childbirth at the Sarwan Community Health Centre (CHC) has led to protests by family members and local residents, who alleged negligence on the part of hospital staff.

According to health department officials, a pregnant woman from Uparbahiyari village was admitted to Sarwan CHC around noon on June 3. She gave birth to a child at approximately 1:15 p.m., but her health reportedly deteriorated soon after delivery. Doctors referred her to Deoghar Sadar Hospital for specialized treatment. However, hospital authorities later received information that the woman had died about an hour after being referred.

The incident triggered strong reactions from the deceased woman’s relatives and villagers, who gathered outside the hospital and demanded action against those responsible. Police personnel and administrative officials arrived at the scene and managed to calm the protesters after assuring them that a thorough investigation would be conducted.

In response to the incident, the Medical Officer-in-Charge described the matter as a serious lapse in duty and ordered immediate administrative action. Two Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), Rinku Mandal and Rima Vrisi, were removed from labour room duties pending further inquiry. Rinku Mandal has been instructed to report daily to the Dubjora Health Sub-Centre, while Rima Vrisi has been transferred to Banwaria until further orders.

Health authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and to ascertain whether any negligence occurred during her treatment.
