Major Anti-Maoist Success: 15 Rebels, Top Leader Anal Da Among Dead in Jharkhand Encounter

Chaibasa : Security forces achieved a major breakthrough in Jharkhand on Thursday after killing at least 15 Maoists, including top commander Patiram Manjhi alias Anal Da, who was carrying a reward of Rs 1 crore, during a fierce encounter in the Saranda forest of West Singhbhum district.

Confirming the development, Jharkhand Police IG (Operations) Michaelraj S. said Anal Da was among those killed and that extensive search operations are continuing in the region.

Anal Da, a native of Giridih, had been active in Maoist activities for over 20 years and was considered a central figure in planning and expanding operations. His operational influence extended across several districts of Jharkhand, with Saranda and Kolhan being key areas under his control.

Officials said he was involved in numerous serious offences, including ambushes on security personnel, IED explosions, extortion rackets and intimidation of contractors.

The encounter broke out in the early hours near Kumbhdih village under Chotanagra police station when security forces launched a coordinated operation based on actionable intelligence. Maoists opened fire from an ambush position, leading to a prolonged exchange of gunfire.

Security forces eventually cornered the Maoists after hours of fighting. Kolhan DIG Anuranjan Kispotta said the operation is still in progress and complete details will be released after its conclusion.

Police said multiple Maoist bodies, along with arms, ammunition and other materials, have been recovered. The area has been cordoned off, reinforcements rushed in and senior officials are closely monitoring the situation.

The Saranda forest has long been considered a Maoist stronghold, and operations against left-wing extremism have intensified in the region in recent months. This encounter is being viewed as the first major anti-Maoist operation of 2026 and a significant achievement for security forces.
