Mahendra Singh Dhoni Becomes Top Taxpayer in Bihar-Jharkhand Once Again

Ranchi: Former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has once again become the highest individual taxpayer in the Bihar-Jharkhand region. The announcement was made by Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax for Bihar and Jharkhand, Dr. D. Sudhakar Rao, during a press briefing held in Ranchi.

The statement came during a key meeting of Income Tax officials from Bihar and Jharkhand held at Radisson Blu Hotel to discuss the implementation of the Government of India’s new Income Tax Act. More than 100 officials participated in the meeting chaired by Dr. Rao. Discussions mainly focused on the smooth rollout of the new law from April 1, 2026, and measures to improve taxpayer services.

According to Dr. Rao, the new Income Tax Act has been framed in a more simplified and systematic manner compared to the earlier legislation. He said the department is taking steps to ensure that taxpayers in both Bihar and Jharkhand face no inconvenience during the transition period and are able to adapt easily to the revised provisions. Training sessions and operational guidelines are also being provided to officials.

He revealed that Bihar and Jharkhand together achieved the targeted income tax collection for the financial year 2025-26, collecting a total of Rs 20,000 crore. Out of this, Jharkhand contributed nearly Rs 12,000 crore, while Bihar accounted for approximately Rs 8,000 crore.

The Principal Chief Commissioner also said that around 40 lakh taxpayers from the two states filed income tax returns during the previous financial year. The department plans to further expand the tax base and simplify the filing process in the future.
