Lisa Ray on balancing motherhood and ambition: “Dreams don’t fade after becoming a parent”

Mumbai — Lisa Ray has shared an emotional glimpse into the challenges of being a working mother, emphasizing that ambition doesn’t disappear after parenthood—and that she wants her daughters to grow up knowing their mother continues to dream.

Taking to social media, Lisa revealed a quiet yet deeply relatable moment. She spoke about leaving home early for work while her daughters were still asleep, without a proper goodbye. “It’s never easy being a working mom. I kissed my girls while they were still asleep and slipped out for an early morning flight. No goodbyes. No last hug. Just the quiet ache you carry through airport security,” she wrote.

What followed, however, turned the moment into something meaningful. Lisa discovered a note from her daughters in her bag, which instantly shifted her emotions. Reflecting on that, she added that despite the distance, everything she does is connected to them.

She explained that while she misses her children deeply, she also wants to set an example for them. According to her, it’s important they understand that “their mother still has dreams” and that ambition and love can coexist. “Ambition doesn’t expire when you become a parent. Love and purpose can live in the same body,” she shared.

Lisa further expressed hope that her daughters will one day understand that her professional commitments are not a choice over them, but rather a way to show them what’s possible in life. “I carry them with me. Always,” she wrote, underlining the emotional bond she shares with them.

On the professional front, Lisa has built a diverse career across Indian and international cinema, gaining recognition with films like Kasoor and the critically acclaimed Water.

Beyond her work, Lisa has also been an inspiration for many. In 2009, she was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer. She faced the illness with remarkable strength, underwent treatment, and later announced that she was cancer-free—emerging as a symbol of resilience and hope.
