Legal awareness program organized in Kasturba Vidyalaya, Kuchai

Ranchi: A legal awareness program was organized by the District Legal Services Authority Seraikela in the Legal Literacy Club at Kasturba Gandhi Residential Girls School, Kuchai. The girls were present on this occasion and they were given detailed information on the Prohibition of Ragging Act, Juvenile Justice Act and ill effects of child marriage.

Mukesh Kumar Sahu said child marriage is a punishable offense under Child Marriage Prohibition Act 2006. It is prohibited to marry a girl whose age is less than 18 years and a boy whose age is less than 21 years.

Due to the prevailing superstition and orthodox tradition in society, some guardians of society consider their sons and daughters to be married on the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya, in which many child marriages also take place, which is prohibited under the Child Marriage Prohibition Act 2006. It is a clear violation of the Constitution. He said no person shall indulge in any form of ragging within or outside the premises of any educational institution.

Any person who contravenes the provisions of this subsection shall, on conviction, be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years, or with a fine which may extend to fifty thousand rupees, or with both. Apart from this, information was also given on the Juvenile Justice Act. Kasturba’s warden, teachers and girls were present in the legal awareness camp.
