Kanpur Women Weave 3 Lakh Tricolours, Powering ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ and Their Own Dreams

Kanpur: Hundreds of women from self-help groups in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur Dehat are playing a vital role in this year’s ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign by working round the clock to produce nearly three lakh Tricolours ahead of Independence Day, while also strengthening their own livelihoods.

A total of 360 women from 96 self-help groups (SHGs), associated with the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), have taken up the task of weaving the national flags. The initiative has created employment opportunities for poor, widowed, differently-abled and less-educated women across the district.

Each flag measures 30 inches by 20 inches and is priced at Rs 20. According to officials, the Tricolours will be displayed in schools, government offices and other public buildings throughout the district as part of the nationwide campaign.

Pratima Singh, President of the Umang Self-Help Group, said the initiative is aimed at providing women with sustainable employment and promoting financial independence.

She noted that many women who were once confined to household responsibilities are now earning a steady income through their skills while continuing to support their families. Joining self-help groups, she added, has given them both economic security and a sense of identity.

Several women involved in the project credited the initiative of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for giving them dignified employment, a regular source of income and greater self-confidence.

The women had also showcased their craftsmanship last year by creating a 200-metre-long Tricolour, drawing widespread appreciation.

Officials said the self-help groups earned an estimated Rs 6 profit per flag during last year’s campaign. While the groups bear the production costs, the profits are retained by them, making the initiative financially rewarding as well.

Ashok Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of the NRLM, said the women of Kanpur Dehat are doing much more than stitching national flags. Through the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, they are building a powerful story of self-reliance, dignity and women’s empowerment while contributing to a nationwide celebration of patriotism.
