JIASOWA Diwali Mela 2026 Inaugurated in Ranchi; ₹45 Lakh Allocated to Three District Libraries

Ranchi: Jharkhand Chief Secretary Avinash Kumar on Thursday inaugurated the JIASOWA Diwali Mela 2026, organised by the Jharkhand IAS Officers’ Wives Association (JIASOWA) at Morabadi Ground in Ranchi. The association announced financial assistance for educational and creative initiatives, including ₹45 lakh for the development of libraries in three districts.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Kumar appreciated JIASOWA’s contribution to social welfare and public service. He said the Diwali Mela was more than a commercial event, serving as a platform to support underprivileged sections of society, promote art and culture, and fulfil social responsibilities.

He particularly appreciated the association’s efforts to identify and nurture children’s talents, especially those of children with special needs, through creative activities and educational support. He said such initiatives reflected a commitment to inclusive development, education and cultural preservation.

The Chief Secretary also noted that the mela provided artisans, craftsmen and artists from different parts of the country with an opportunity to showcase their work and interact with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. He urged the organisers to ensure the event was conducted smoothly and transparently while protecting the interests of stall owners, artists and visitors.

₹45 lakh for libraries in three districts

As part of its education initiatives, JIASOWA extended financial assistance of ₹15 lakh each to libraries in Chaibasa, Deoghar and Dumka, taking the total allocation to ₹45 lakh.

The assistance is intended to improve library infrastructure and facilities, helping students prepare for competitive examinations, expand their knowledge and develop their skills.

The association also provided ₹96,000 to Shreyashi Banerjee for music education programmes for hearing-impaired and visually impaired children. Another ₹96,000 was extended to Swastika Banerjee to encourage art and craft activities among children and help develop their creative abilities.

Government schemes showcased at the mela

The Information and Public Relations Department has set up a stall at the venue to familiarise visitors with various government welfare schemes and initiatives.

Informative booklets and magazines on government programmes are being distributed free of cost. Short films and documentaries highlighting these schemes are also being screened on LED displays to increase public awareness.

Cultural programmes draw visitors despite rain

Rainfall did not dampen the enthusiasm of visitors, who continued to attend the mela and enjoy its cultural attractions. Performances included a sitar and sarod jugalbandi, light music and dance programmes. A puppet show also emerged as a major attraction.

Closing date extended to November 3

JIASOWA President Preeti Kumar announced that the closing date of the mela had been extended by one day, from November 2 to November 3, 2026.

She said the decision was taken in view of the prevailing weather conditions and the possibility of further rainfall. The extension is intended to give vendors additional time and help protect them from potential financial losses due to adverse weather.
