Jharkhand youth booked for killing wildlife to gain social media attention

Ranchi: A disturbing case has emerged from Jharkhand’s Khunti district, where a youth allegedly hunted and killed wild animals—some of them protected species—and shared videos online to gain likes and views.

The incident came to light after multiple videos went viral on social media. Following complaints by animal rights activists, the Forest Department registered a case and launched an investigation.

Officials said an Instagram account was consistently uploading clips showing the accused capturing and killing animals such as the highly venomous Russell’s viper, the Indian rock python, and several protected birds. The videos also depicted him cooking and consuming the animals.

After verification, authorities identified the accused as Lutar Purti. He was taken into custody by the Forest Department and questioned. Officials confirmed that many of the animals involved fall under legally protected categories, making the acts a serious violation of wildlife laws.

Family members of the accused have claimed that he is mentally unwell. They stated that he became seriously ill after consuming snake meat and appealed for leniency so he could receive medical treatment. They also issued an apology on his behalf.

The accused has since been released on bond, with assurances from his family that he will cooperate with the investigation and appear when summoned.

Reacting strongly, animal rights groups condemned the incident, saying turning cruelty into “entertainment” reflects a dangerous and deeply troubling trend. Authorities have stated that further investigation is ongoing and that strict legal action will be taken in accordance with wildlife protection laws.
