Jharkhand Steps Up Malaria Control Measures After Four Fatalities in East Singhbhum

Ranchi: The Jharkhand government has launched an intensified statewide malaria control campaign after four people died from the disease in East Singhbhum district, prompting health authorities to place all districts on high alert.

On Wednesday, Additional Chief Secretary of the Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Department, Ajay Kumar Singh, directed all deputy commissioners to immediately strengthen malaria prevention and response measures. Districts with reported malaria cases have been instructed to prepare emergency action plans, enhance surveillance, and ensure accountability at every level.

Health officials have been asked to carry out active fever surveys in vulnerable areas through Multipurpose Health Workers (MPWs). Every person suspected of having malaria must be tested promptly, and confirmed cases should receive immediate treatment. Authorities have also been instructed to ensure that seriously ill patients are admitted to hospitals without delay and receive proper medical care, along with regular monitoring and follow-up.

The department has made it mandatory to conduct a mass fever survey in any locality where a fresh malaria case is detected. Village-wise malaria records will also be maintained, while health workers in high-risk villages will be equipped with Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) kits and essential medicines. Community Health Centres have been directed to maintain adequate stocks of diagnostic kits and anti-malarial drugs, besides intensifying insecticide spraying and mosquito larval control measures in affected areas.

The state government has also ordered an extensive public awareness campaign to encourage early diagnosis and promote preventive measures against mosquito-borne diseases.

To improve oversight, a three-level review mechanism has been introduced. Community Health Centres will conduct weekly reviews, Civil Surgeons will hold fortnightly assessments, and Deputy Commissioners will chair monthly district-level review meetings.

Ajay Kumar Singh has instructed all deputy commissioners to personally monitor malaria control operations to ensure swift containment of the disease and prevent further fatalities.
