Jharkhand HC Flags Major Irregularities in JSSC Merit List, Demands Clarification

Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court on Thursday strongly criticised the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) over alleged discrepancies in the revised merit list for Assistant Teacher recruitment in Mathematics and Science.

The court noted that multiple complaints point to serious lapses that undermine the fairness and transparency of the selection process. Justice Ananda Sen observed that the documents presented showed that several high-scoring candidates had been excluded from the revised list, while some with lower marks were included.

The bench has asked the JSSC to clearly explain the criteria, rules and methodology used to prepare the revised results.

The petition, filed by Kishore Kumar and other aggrieved candidates, states that all of them were included in the initial merit list and were called for district-level counselling, during which their official scores were shown—scores that placed them higher in merit. However, the revised results reportedly retained lower-scoring candidates while removing higher-scoring ones, including the petitioners.

Their counsel, Advocate Chanchal Jain, submitted 15–20 examples demonstrating the inconsistencies. The petitioners also argued that they secured high category-wise scores and hold valid TET qualifications, making their removal inexplicable.

Terming the matter “serious,” the High Court directed that the posts linked to the petitioners remain vacant until the issue is resolved. It has also ordered JSSC to file a detailed counter-affidavit explaining how higher-scoring candidates were dropped while lower-scoring candidates were included.
