Jharkhand faces 15% fall in GST revenue as Centre cuts tax rates

Ranchi: October brought disappointing news for Jharkhand’s finances as the state’s GST revenue dropped by ₹456 crore due to the central government’s reduction in GST rates. According to official data, Jharkhand collected ₹2,518 crore in GST this October, compared to ₹2,974 crore during the same month last year — a 15 percent decline.

Figures released by the GST Council show that 20 states and union territories have witnessed a fall in GST revenue. Puducherry suffered the steepest loss at 24 percent, followed by Himachal Pradesh at 17 percent. With a 15 percent decline, Jharkhand ranks third among the most-affected states.

In contrast, the overall national GST collection saw a marginal 2 percent rise — from ₹1,45,052 crore in October 2024 to ₹1,42,251 crore this year — benefiting the central government. However, state governments, including Jharkhand, are expected to face growing fiscal stress as their share of tax revenue continues to shrink.
