Jharkhand becomes 1st state to link teacher promotions to assessment results

Ranchi: Jharkhand has become the first state in the country to make teacher promotions dependent on their performance in an assessment exam. The state conducted a ‘Teacher Need Assessment’ (TNA) exam to identify the training needs of its teachers, and the results have now been declared. Over 110,000 teachers from across the state appeared for the exam.

The 200-mark test evaluated teachers not only on their subject knowledge but also on assessment skills, general knowledge, mathematics, English, and Hindi. There was no pass-fail criterion or cut-off; the primary goal was to gauge the current academic status of teachers and identify areas where training is required.

A surprising finding was that only 0.1% of teachers — just 106 individuals — scored above 75%. Around 6% scored less than 25%, while nearly 80% of teachers scored up to 50%. About 13% scored between 51% and 75%. Based on these results, customized training modules will be developed and implemented according to teachers’ specific needs. The state government has clarified that future promotions will be linked to performance in this assessment.

The initiative has received praise from the central government, with the Ministry of Education commending Jharkhand’s policy during a recent meeting.

At the district level, teachers from Dhanbad performed the best with an average score of 48%, while those from Latehar scored the lowest, averaging between 36% and 38%. The exam was mandatory for all government school teachers from classes 1 to 12 across the state.
