Mumbai: Actress and social media influencer Jannat Zubair has seemingly taken a subtle dig at several celebrities who recently came out in support of the ongoing student protests, questioning why many chose to speak only after the movement had been underway for weeks.
In a strongly worded post on social media, Jannat wrote, “It’s funny how everyone suddenly found their conscience on the same day. The protests have been going on for over a month. Students and protesters didn’t start suffering yesterday. Interesting how empathy arrived all at once.”
Although she did not mention anyone by name, her post came shortly after several Bollywood stars publicly expressed solidarity with the protesting students.
Kareena Kapoor Khan said she “can’t sit with it any longer” and voiced her support for the students. Salman Khan praised the protesters for keeping the movement peaceful and urged that the issue should not be politicised. He also appealed to activist Sonam Wangchuk to end his hunger strike, expressing hope that the government would take action against those responsible. Salman even offered to send food from his home to Wangchuk.
Alia Bhatt described the students’ courage as “humbling,” while Varun Dhawan called for accountability and reforms to ensure a fair education system. Sara Ali Khan and Ananya Panday also extended their support through social media posts.
The protests, now continuing for over a month, began over allegations of examination irregularities and the NEET paper leak. Students have been demanding greater transparency, accountability and reforms to safeguard the integrity of the education system.
The movement gained further momentum after social activist Sonam Wangchuk joined the campaign and undertook a hunger strike in solidarity with the students. He ended his fast on Thursday.
