HC hears PIL on illegal mining, rehab of displaced people

Ranchi: The High Court heard a public interest litigation (PIL) regarding the illegal mining activities by a coal company and the demand for the rehabilitation of displaced people. During the hearing, the court expressed its dissatisfaction over the failure to file a response and directed that the case be heard again on January 6. The court further stated that if the response is not filed by that date, it will pass an order.

The company, which was granted coal mining leases in Pakur and Dumka districts by the government in 2015, is accused of exceeding the agreed mining limits. This over-mining has allegedly caused a loss of crores of rupees in revenue to the government. Advocate Ram Subhag Singh, representing the petitioner, filed the PIL in the High Court, urging action against the company.

The court has directed the state government and senior officials from the mining department multiple times to file their response, but as of now, no response has been submitted. The bench of Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad and Justice Navneet Kumar is currently hearing this PIL.
