Farmers in state not labourers, but landowners: Minister Tirkey

Ranchi: A district-level agricultural workshop and training programme was organised at Banhora Jatra ground in Ranchi, focusing on empowering farmers through advanced techniques and government schemes. Speaking at the event, Minister of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Cooperation, Shilpi Neha Tirkey, emphasized that farmers in the state are not labourers but landowners. She encouraged them to embrace their role as owners and adopt modern agricultural practices to generate substantial income.

The minister highlighted that previously, farmers would earn around ₹25,000 per acre, but with improved techniques, this profit has increased to nearly ₹1 lakh. She said that the key to this growth lies in selecting the right crops and applying modern agricultural methods.

An exhibition showcasing departmental schemes was also set up at the venue. Visitors, particularly from rural areas, were informed about various schemes and the process to avail their benefits. Shilpi Neha Tirkey expressed concern over the trend of people preferring wage labor over farming and urged a shift back to agriculture for sustainable livelihoods.

She cited the success story of Sarhul Ajeevika Farmer Producer Company (FPO), which has reached an annual turnover of nearly ₹1 crore due to collective effort and hard work. A grant of ₹15 lakh was awarded to the FPO by the department as recognition of its achievements.

The event also shed light on the potential of pig farming in Jharkhand, pointing out the high national demand for the state’s pigs. Proper awareness and training in this area could help farmers significantly increase their income.

Former minister Bandhu Tirkey also addressed the gathering, stating that the department has brought opportunities directly to villagers’ doorsteps. He urged farmers to connect with schemes related to agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, and cooperatives to build a better future and reduce migration for employment.

As part of the event, grants of ₹15 lakh each were awarded to Sarhul Ajeevika Farmer Producer Company and Sarai Phool Mahila Farmer Producer Company. Under the Kisan Samriddhi Yojana, beneficiaries Punita Khalkho and Suman Oraon received support.

Local public representatives including Neelam Tirkey, Asha Devi, Pushpa Toppo, Riazul, as well as Shiv Kachhap, Deepu Sinha, Prakash Tirkey, Muntazir Khan, Bechu Tirkey, Lalit Kachhap, and Suka Oraon were also present, along with several departmental officials.
