Elephant strays near Ruka dam, creates panic among locals

Ranchi: A wild elephant caused panic among the residents near Ruka Dam, located close to Ranchi. On Tuesday morning, locals spotted the elephant, which had strayed from its path and reached near the Ruka Dam. The incident was reported to the police and the forest department by the concerned residents.

According to reports, the elephant is moving towards the Salhan basti area of Ormanjhi. People are flocking to the fields to catch a glimpse of the elephant, with some even recording videos. However, the elephant’s proximity to the settlement has caused fear among the residents.

In rural areas of Jharkhand, especially in places where elephants frequently pass through, it is not uncommon for elephants to enter villages. There are frequent reports of elephants damaging crops and destroying houses.

In recent times, incidents of wild elephants reaching the outskirts of Ranchi have been on the rise. Just two months ago, an elephant was spotted in a residential area of Ratu. After receiving the information, a team from the forest department safely escorted the elephant back to the forest.

The increase in elephant sightings near human settlements is largely due to the depletion of food and water sources in the forests and ongoing deforestation. As a result, elephants are now venturing closer to villages and even urban areas, creating a sense of fear among the local population.Ranchi: A wild elephant caused panic among the residents near Ruka Dam, located close to Ranchi.
