Dandiya, Garba Events in Jamshedpur Spark Debate Over Identity Checks and Participation

Jamshedpur- Dandiya and Garba events organised during Navratri have triggered a controversy in Jharkhand’s Jamshedpur, with questions being raised over identity verification, participation by non-Hindus and the preservation of religious traditions.

Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy has described Dandiya as a Hindu religious celebration and urged the administration to consider the implications of such events for social harmony.

In a social media post, Roy said Garba and Dandiya were closely linked to Navratri and the worship of Goddess Durga. He said some people had approached him seeking his intervention to obtain administrative permission for a Dandiya Night event.

Roy said he had brought the matter to the attention of the officials concerned and cautioned organisers against turning religious celebrations into purely entertainment-driven programmes.

He also questioned whether people who did not follow the Hindu faith or worship Goddess Durga should be permitted to participate in such events, urging the administration to consider the potential impact on social harmony.

The controversy intensified after identity cards were checked at the entrances of several Dandiya and Garba events during Navratri.

According to media reports, a dispute broke out during an event at an amusement park in Bistupur after an alleged discrepancy was found between the name given by a young man and the name on his identity card. The incident briefly disrupted proceedings at the venue.

The Hindu Utsav Samiti and other organisations have called for identity verification at such events, citing concerns that some individuals could gain entry by concealing their identities.

The commercialisation of traditional celebrations has also come under scrutiny. Some religious organisations have alleged that Dandiya and Garba programmes are increasingly taking on the character of DJ parties and nightclub events rather than retaining their traditional religious focus.

These organisations have urged the district administration to frame clear guidelines for such programmes and strengthen identity checks and security arrangements.

The developments have sparked a broader debate in Jamshedpur over religious customs, participation in public cultural events and the need to maintain social harmony. The administration faces the challenge of addressing the concerns raised while ensuring law and order and preventing tensions from escalating.
