CAG Report Flags ₹41 Crore Wasted on Incomplete Projects in Jharkhand

Ranchi: The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India tabled its compliance report for the financial year 2022–23 in the Jharkhand Assembly on Monday, exposing major lapses in government projects where ₹41.10 crore was spent without serving the intended public purpose.

According to the report, the audit of the Road Construction Department found that ₹19.15 crore spent on land acquisition for road widening yielded no results due to poor coordination between the executive engineer and land acquisition authorities.

Similarly, two bridges built over the Damodar and Gawai rivers at a cost of ₹15.09 crore remain unused, as no approach roads were constructed owing to pending land acquisition, rendering the expenditure ineffective.

The Rural Development Department was also pulled up for constructing a building in Chandan Kiari block of Bokaro district, meant to serve as a shopping mall, which has never been put to use, wasting ₹5.09 crore. Additionally, ₹1.77 crore spent on a web-based accounts management system also went unutilized.

In the Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperative Department, ₹3.67 crore spent between January and June 2014 on 16 cold storage and sorting facilities brought no benefit as the facilities have remained non-operational.

The audit further revealed that the Tribal Welfare Department spent ₹1.55 crore on constructing a 50-bed rural hospital in Dhalbhumgarh block of Jamshedpur district, but the facility remains unopened even three years after its completion.
