Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi on Saturday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) controls the Election Commission, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED), income tax department and the bureaucracy. Speaking at the Samvidhan Samman Sammellan, he emphasised the importance of social justice and representation for marginalised communities. The event featured notable figures, including descendants of freedom fighters and activists advocating for the rights of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes.
He said, “The Constitution is under constant attack from all sides, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah, and it needs to be protected.” This was Gandhi’s first visit to Jharkhand after the assembly poll schedule was announced in the state by the Election Commission. The assembly polls will be held in two phases – on November 13 and 20. The counting will take place on November 23.
Gandhi began by honouring prominent guests such as Buddram Munda, a member of the Birsa Munda family, and freedom fighter Amanat Ali. He highlighted the contributions of various leaders in the fight for social justice, referencing historical struggles for equality.
During the event, speakers raised crucial issues, including the need for effective implementation of laws benefiting marginalized groups, demands for the recognition of tribal languages, and the establishment of a central university for tribals in Jharkhand. They criticized the Congress government’s decision in 1961 to remove the tribal religion code, questioning the motivations behind such actions.
Gandhi called for unity among various communities and reiterated the Congress party’s commitment to fighting for the rights of all citizens. He urged attendees to continue the struggle for justice, equity, and representation, emphasizing that the Constitution must be upheld for all.
The event concluded with a call to action for political engagement, stressing the importance of inclusive governance and representation in decision-making processes. The audience was encouraged to stand in solidarity with the marginalized and work towards a more equitable society.
As the conference wrapped up, participants expressed their hope for a renewed commitment to social justice under Gandhi’s leadership, marking a significant moment for the Congress party in Jharkhand.
