Jamshedpur: Jharkhand is likely to experience an extended spell of changing weather conditions over the next few days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds across the state till May 21. At the same time, some north-western districts may continue to face heatwave-like conditions.
According to the weather department, several parts of the state are expected to receive thundershowers accompanied by lightning and winds blowing at speeds of 40 to 50 kmph in the coming days.
The IMD has further warned that wind speeds could increase to 50–60 kmph on May 17 and 18, especially in north-eastern and nearby central districts such as Dhanbad, Koderma, Hazaribagh, Bokaro, Ramgarh and Ranchi. These conditions may lead to localized disruptions in normal life.
While thunderstorms are expected in many areas, districts in north-western Jharkhand — including Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra and Latehar — are likely to experience heatwave conditions, creating a sharp contrast in weather across the state.
Meteorologists said the unstable weather pattern is being influenced by a well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal. A cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 km above sea level is also contributing to the system.
In addition, an active east-west trough stretching from West Madhya Pradesh to North Bangladesh through Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal is increasing atmospheric instability over Jharkhand.
As per the forecast, thunderstorms are expected in most districts on May 15 and again on May 19, barring parts of the north-western region. Fresh thunderstorm activity is also likely over north-eastern and adjoining central districts on May 20 and 21.
The administration has advised people to remain cautious during lightning and strong winds, avoid taking shelter under trees, and stay prepared for sudden heavy rain and gusty conditions.
