Deoghar — In a dramatic crackdown, police in Deoghar have busted a highway robbery gang after a failed heist in the Mohanpur area led to the death of one of the criminals—shot accidentally by his own accomplice.
The Incident
The robbery took place late on April 23 near Jaipur Mod under the jurisdiction of Mohanpur Police Station. A Tata Magic vehicle carrying refrigerators from Ranchi to Sahibganj was intercepted by six assailants. The group, traveling in a white Toyota Fortuner and a motorcycle, assaulted the driver and looted ₹2,000 in cash along with his mobile phone.
Fatal Misfire
The situation escalated when the criminals tried to forcibly abduct the driver at gunpoint. During the scuffle, a firearm discharged accidentally, hitting one of the gang members. The group rushed the injured accomplice to a local hospital but fled soon after. He later died from his injuries.
Police Crackdown
Acting swiftly, a team led by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer launched a manhunt. Superintendent of Police Pravin Pushkar confirmed that the police intercepted the getaway vehicle and arrested four suspects.
The arrested accused are:
- Akash Ramani (22), Kunda, Deoghar
- Shashank Shekhar alias Golu (22), Nagar Thana, Deoghar
- Shivam Kumar (24), Nagar Thana, Deoghar
- Rahul Kumar (25), Rikhia, Deoghar
Seizures and Case Details
Police recovered several items from the accused, including:
- A country-made pistol with a magazine
- Three live cartridges and one spent shell
- The white Fortuner used in the crime
- An R15 motorcycle without a number plate
- A broken number plate of the SUV
A case (No. 58/2026) has been registered at Mohanpur Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act. All four accused have been sent to judicial custody as further investigation continues.
