ICAR-IIAB marks World Food Day with farmers’ meet, input distribution programme

Ranchi: The ICAR–Indian Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology (ICAR-IIAB), Ranchi, organised a farmers’ meet and input distribution programme for Scheduled Tribe farmers to mark World Food Day 2025. This year’s global theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future,” highlighted collective efforts across agriculture, science, and society for a sustainable and prosperous future.

The event was graced by Shilpi Neha Tirkey, Minister for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperation, Government of Jharkhand, as the chief guest. Dr A. Siddiqui, Secretary, and Gopal Ji Tiwari, Joint Secretary of the same department, attended as special guests. Over a thousand farmers, women’s groups, agri-entrepreneurs, and scientists from across the state participated.

In her address, Minister Tirkey praised ICAR-IIAB’s contribution to farmers’ welfare and said that the institute’s outreach reflects the true spirit of this year’s theme — collaboration among government, research institutions, and farmers to build a resilient agricultural system. She assured farmers of the state government’s continued commitment to welfare, technological support, and income enhancement.

Joint Secretary Gopal Ji Tiwari said that integrating biotechnology with agriculture could open new opportunities for Jharkhand’s farmers and commended ICAR-IIAB Director Dr Sujay Rakshit and his team for their proactive initiatives. Dr S.C. Dubey, Vice-Chancellor of Birsa Agricultural University, emphasised the role of science in transforming rural livelihoods and encouraged farmers to diversify crops and stay connected with Krishi Vigyan Kendras for regular updates.

Two women farmers shared their experiences, appreciating the institute for providing quality seeds, vaccination support, and guidance on scientific methods of cultivation.

Presiding over the programme, Dr Sujay Rakshit, Director, ICAR-IIAB, said that every farmer is a guardian of the nation’s food and nutritional security. He added that the institute is dedicated not only to research in biotechnology but also to ensuring that innovations reach the farming community.

Scientists held discussions on topics such as improved rabi crop techniques, natural farming, horticulture prospects in Jharkhand, duck and poultry farming, livestock and fisheries development, national pest surveillance, the farmer grievance redressal portal, and key agricultural schemes.

The event also included the distribution of high-yielding seeds, bio-fertilisers, planting materials, and other agricultural inputs to tribal farmers. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Bijay Pal Bhardana, who expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, scientists, staff, and farmers.

The event reflected the true essence of World Food Day — a collective step “hand in hand” toward ensuring better food and a better future.
