Godda — Surya Hansda, a notorious criminal with multiple cases against him and a former BJP leader, was killed in a police encounter in Jharkhand’s Godda district on Monday morning.
The encounter took place near Jirli Samari Pahari in the Boarijor police station limits — a rugged, forested area where Hansda was reportedly hiding. Following the operation, police sealed the site and prohibited entry, though onlookers gathered nearby.
Godda SP Mukesh Kumar confirmed Hansda’s death, adding that full details would be revealed during a press conference at 4 p.m.
Hansda, a resident of Dakaita village, was once an influential political figure. He contested the Borio assembly seat in 2019 as a BJP candidate. After being denied a ticket in 2024, he joined the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) but lost the election.
Police records list him as an accused in multiple violent crimes, including a May 27 firing at Eastern Coalfields Ltd’s Rajmahal project in Paharpur, which injured a machine operator, allegedly on his orders. He was also linked to an earlier incident in Sahibganj where trucks and other vehicles were set on fire.
Police said Hansda had been on the run for months, frequently changing hideouts to evade capture after being linked to recent violent incidents.
