From Maoist Fear to Fisheries: PM Modi Applauds Jharkhand’s Om Prakash Sahu

Gumla – Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his monthly radio program ‘Mann Ki Baat’, lauded Om Prakash Sahu from Kumhari village, Gumla district, for overcoming adversity and becoming a model of transformation through fish farming under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).

Sahu faced serious challenges, including threats, during the initial phase of his journey. However, the launch of PMMSY provided resources and training that helped him build fish ponds and start a new livelihood. With district support, he soon became an example of change in a region once under Maoist influence.

“Back in 2008, Gumla was a conflict zone with no development and rampant fear,” said Sahu. “I lost several friends. But after learning about fish farming through PMMSY, my life turned around. I now encourage youth to avoid Maoist paths—there are better options.”

Basia’s farmlands once lay abandoned, and youth were fleeing for jobs. The PLFI had a stronghold, but people like Sahu chose peace, taking up fisheries and inspiring others to abandon militancy.

The shift also received support from the administration. Then DC Aradhana Patnaik issued gun licenses to Peace Committee members, including Sahu, helping locals stand up against insurgents.

Fisheries Officer Kusum Lata welcomed the PM’s recognition: “It’s a proud moment. Om Prakash and others have shown what sustainable livelihoods can achieve.”

The ₹20,050 crore PMMSY scheme, running until FY2025, aims to drive a “Blue Revolution” with ecological and economic sustainability. An additional ₹6,000 crore under the 2023–24 budget will support smaller players in the fish value chain.

Thanks to this initiative, over 150 families in Basia are now thriving through aquaculture. A region once known for unrest is now a beacon of growth and sustainability.
