UPI Outage Disrupts Digital Payments Across Multiple Cities

New Delhi — Digital payments across India faced a major disruption on Wednesday, with many users unable to complete transactions through UPI platforms.

According to outage tracker Downdetector, complaints spiked sharply במהלך the day, pointing to a widespread technical issue affecting users nationwide.

The impact was especially noticeable for customers of State Bank of India, which saw more than 500 outage reports. UCO Bank also recorded around 40 complaints. Overall, UPI-related issues crossed 40 reports and continued to rise as more users flagged problems.

The disruption wasn’t limited to one region. Users from cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur, and Pune reported failed transactions and payment errors. In the case of SBI, complaints also poured in from Kolkata, Guwahati, and Chennai.

Many frustrated users turned to X (formerly Twitter) to share their experiences. Some reported transactions getting stuck midway, while others said their UPI apps failed to load entirely.

Responding to the situation, SBI clarified that a scheduled maintenance activity had been extended until 12:30 pm on April 1. The bank warned that several services — including UPI, IMPS, YONO, internet banking, NEFT, and RTGS — could face temporary disruptions.

To manage during the downtime, SBI advised customers to use alternatives such as UPI Lite, the eRupee (CBDC) app, and ATM services. The bank also apologised for the inconvenience caused and thanked users for their patience.

The incident highlights how dependent millions have become on digital payments — and how even short disruptions can affect daily life across the country.
