India’s Internet Subscribers Cross 1 Billion Mark by June, Driven by Broadband Growth

New Delhi- India’s internet user base crossed the 1 billion milestone by June 30, 2025, reaching 1,002.85 million, a 3.48 per cent rise from March, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Of the total, 4.47 crore users had wired connections, while 95.81 crore relied on wireless. Broadband subscribers surged 3.77 per cent to 979.71 million, while narrowband users declined to 23.14 million.

Overall telephone subscribers stood at 1,218.36 million during the March–June quarter, up 1.46 per cent from the previous quarter, pushing India’s tele-density to 86.09 per cent. Urban internet users numbered 57.94 crore, while rural users stood at 42.33 crore.

The data further showed that the average revenue per wireless user (ARPU) was Rs 186.62 per month, with average monthly usage of 16.76 hours. The telecom sector’s gross revenue touched Rs 96,646 crore, down 1.63 per cent from the previous quarter but up 12.34 per cent year-on-year. Adjusted gross revenue rose 2.65 per cent to Rs 81,325 crore, with access services contributing 83.62 per cent.

Licence fees increased 2.63 per cent to Rs 6,506 crore, while pass-through charges fell 19.45 per cent to Rs 10,457 crore.

As of June 30, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) had permitted 912 private satellite TV channels for uplinking/downlinking. Of the 902 channels available for downlinking, 333 were satellite pay TV channels.
