RIMS Ranchi Removes Brain Tumour Through Incision of Just One Inch

Ranchi: Doctors at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, have successfully removed a brain tumour through an incision measuring approximately one inch, marking a significant achievement for the institute’s Department of Neurosurgery.

The surgery was performed on 42-year-old Sonia Khatoon, a resident of Dhanbad, whose medical condition presented several challenges for the treating team. The patient was suffering from neurofibromatosis and oligodendroglioma, a type of brain tumour that develops from cells in the central nervous system.

According to the institute, associated health complications made anaesthesia administration and preoperative preparation particularly challenging. To minimise risks, doctors consulted specialists from multiple departments and completed a comprehensive assessment before proceeding with the operation.

The surgery was conducted by a team from the Department of Neurosurgery under the leadership of its head, Dr Anand Prakash. Dr Narayan and Dr Kumar Deepak were also part of the neurosurgical team.

The anaesthesia team, comprising Dr Mukesh, Dr Rajesh, Dr Vashishth, Dr Kshitij and Dr Adhishree, played a crucial role in managing the complexities associated with the patient’s condition and ensuring that the procedure could be completed successfully.

The operation was carried out through coordinated efforts involving the neurosurgery, anaesthesia and other concerned departments. The use of an incision of approximately one inch highlights the importance of precise surgical planning and technique in managing complex neurosurgical cases. However, the suitability of such a small incision depends on the tumour’s location, size and other clinical factors.

Following the operation, Sonia Khatoon remains under close medical observation. Doctors are hopeful that her condition will continue to improve, enabling her to gradually return to her normal daily activities.

The successful procedure underscores the role of multidisciplinary coordination in treating patients with complex medical conditions. It also reflects RIMS Ranchi’s efforts to strengthen specialised medical services for patients from Jharkhand and neighbouring regions, potentially reducing the need for some patients to seek advanced treatment outside the state.
