Congress Move Triggers Rift in INDIA Bloc, JMM Decides to Contest Both Rajya Sabha Seats

Ranchi: The upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Jharkhand have taken an interesting political turn, exposing differences within the ruling alliance. Pressure politics appears to have begun within the coalition after the Congress announced its Rajya Sabha candidate on Thursday evening without reportedly securing the consent of Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

In response, Chief Minister Hemant Soren convened an emergency meeting of JMM legislators on Friday morning. During the meeting, the party reportedly decided to field its own candidates for both Rajya Sabha seats. It was also decided that the names of the candidates would be announced by the Chief Minister himself.

Sources indicate that the Chief Minister had earlier informed Congress leaders that a decision on the Rajya Sabha elections would be taken on June 5. However, Congress went ahead and declared Pranav Jha, an advisor to the party’s national president, as its candidate. Political observers believe the move was aimed at increasing pressure on JMM during seat-sharing negotiations.

Following the Congress announcement, JMM legislators were contacted late Thursday night and asked to attend an important meeting called by the Chief Minister. After deliberations with nearly all party MLAs, JMM resolved to contest both seats independently. State minister Hafizul Hasan later confirmed the decision, stating that JMM would field candidates for both Rajya Sabha vacancies.

Congress Strategy Appears to Have Backfired

The Congress’s decision to announce a candidate without a broader alliance consensus may have complicated its own electoral prospects. Based on the current strength of parties in the Jharkhand Assembly, Congress has 16 MLAs, while a candidate requires the support of 28 first-preference votes to secure victory.

This means Congress would need an additional 12 votes, a target that currently appears difficult to achieve. Within the ruling alliance, the Rashtriya Janata Dal has four MLAs and the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation has two. With RJD being part of the government and holding a ministerial berth, political analysts believe its support for a Congress candidate is far from certain if alliance tensions escalate.

Opportunity Opens Up for BJP

The developments could also create an opening for the opposition. The opposition bloc currently has 24 MLAs, including 21 from the Bharatiya Janata Party and one each from Janata Dal (United), Lok Janshakti Party, and All Jharkhand Students Union.

To reach the winning mark, the BJP-led camp would need the support of four additional legislators. Given the emerging political equations, there is growing speculation that second-preference votes could once again play a decisive role in determining the outcome of the Rajya Sabha elections in Jharkhand.

The evolving situation has added a fresh layer of uncertainty to the contest, with alliance dynamics now becoming as important as the numbers in the Assembly.
