Centre Removes CBSE Chief and Secretary Amid OSM Row, Orders Probe into Evaluation System

New Delhi/Ranchi: In a major administrative shake-up, the Central Government has transferred the Chairman and Secretary of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) with immediate effect amid allegations of irregularities linked to the board’s On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.

The action comes as the government investigates complaints regarding the procurement of OSM services and technical issues reported in the newly introduced digital evaluation and re-evaluation system. A high-level committee has been constituted to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter and submit its findings to the authorities.

The controversy gained attention after concerns were raised over alleged glitches in the online marking system and the re-evaluation portal. Reports of discrepancies in answer-sheet scanning, evaluation-related issues, and technical shortcomings prompted demands for a thorough review of the process. A complaint filed by a 17-year-old student regarding alleged irregularities in re-evaluation further intensified scrutiny of the system.

Officials said the committee will examine all aspects of the procurement process as well as the operational performance of the OSM platform to determine whether any procedural lapses occurred.

The development is being viewed as one of the most significant administrative actions ever taken within CBSE, reflecting the government’s focus on maintaining transparency and credibility in the examination and evaluation process.

Meanwhile, CBSE has opened its online portal for students seeking verification of issues in scanned answer sheets and re-evaluation of examination papers. The facility is available only to students who have already obtained scanned copies of their answer books.

The portal became operational on June 2 and will remain open until midnight on June 6. Students are required to submit their applications online through the official CBSE website using Aadhaar-based authentication. The board has clarified that no offline applications will be accepted during this process.

The inquiry panel is expected to complete its investigation and submit a report in the coming weeks, following a detailed review of the OSM procurement and evaluation framework.
