NHRC Monitor Reviews Human Rights Education at IIIT Ranchi, Recommends Institutional Reforms

Ranchi: Indian Institute of Information Technology Ranchi hosted Prof. Kanhaiya Tripathi, Special Monitor of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), on April 23, 2026, during his official visit to Jharkhand to assess the state of human rights education and gender equality in higher institutions.

During the visit, Prof. Tripathi held detailed discussions with the institute’s Director, Prof. Rajeev Srivastava, along with faculty members, officials, and students. The interaction focused on reviewing existing systems, identifying gaps, and exploring ways to strengthen awareness and implementation of human rights and gender sensitivity on campus.

He stressed the importance of building inclusive, responsive institutional mechanisms to ensure student welfare and equitable learning environments.

Among his key recommendations were the establishment of a dedicated Human Rights Cell, expansion of gender sensitisation initiatives, and the creation of a digital platform for student welfare and grievance redressal. He also proposed regular workshops on human rights and gender equality, along with the introduction of an open elective course on the subject, which could eventually evolve into a certificate or degree programme, subject to approvals.

Additionally, Prof. Tripathi suggested launching an academic journal focused on human rights research and forming a task force on cyber hygiene and security to promote responsible digital behaviour among students.
