New Delhi- The Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP 8×8) — India’s first amphibious wheeled infantry combat vehicle — is set to enter the global defence market after successful induction at home.
Jointly designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and developed by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), WhAP 8×8 offers high mobility, survivability, and mission adaptability, marking a major step forward in indigenous defence innovation.
Built with a survivable monocoque hull, scalable ballistic and mine protection, independent suspension, and a central tyre inflation system, the vehicle is capable of handling rugged terrains and combat environments. It supports both manned and unmanned weapon stations, including anti-tank guided missiles, and is powered by a high-performance engine.
Cleared for production and export in October 2019, the WhAP 8×8 was envisioned to replace the Army’s aging BRDM-2s. Showcased during the 2023 Republic Day parade, its Armoured Personnel Carrier variant featured composite armour, a 30 mm BMP-2 turret, and enhanced blast protection.
The modular design accommodates 10–12 soldiers and allows configurations for multiple roles — infantry fighting vehicle, reconnaissance vehicle, command post, mortar carrier, ambulance, and more — making it suitable for both combat and humanitarian missions.
After entering service with the Indian Army in 2022 and the CRPF in 2023, the platform gained global traction when Morocco placed an order for 150 units in 2024. Tata Advanced Systems has since inaugurated a 20,000 sq. metre defence manufacturing facility in Berrechid, Morocco — the country’s largest and the first overseas plant set up by an Indian private defence company.
Initially meant to serve the Royal Moroccan Army, the facility will also cater to other friendly nations, especially in Africa.
At the inauguration, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted that the project reflects India’s evolving vision — from “Make in India” to “Make with Friends” and “Make for the World.”
The initiative is expected to create jobs, develop local technical skills, and strengthen India-Morocco defence ties. With WhAP 8×8, India demonstrates its capability to design, develop, and export advanced combat systems, reinforcing its role as a rising global defence supplier.
