Sub-Inspector Suspended for Demanding Bribe in Dowry Harassment Case

Ranchi: A sub-inspector posted at Kadma police station in Jamshedpur has been suspended with immediate effect for allegedly demanding a bribe of ₹1 lakh from a woman who had approached the station to lodge a dowry harassment complaint. The suspension was ordered by SSP Piyush Pandey following an inquiry report submitted by City SP Kumar Shivashish.

The matter surfaced when the woman informed former BJP district spokesperson Ankit Anand that SI Sunil Kumar Das had demanded money on June 3 and 4 in exchange for filing an FIR. Anand then accompanied the woman and her brother to meet the SSP on June 5 and highlighted the issue on Twitter, tagging the Chief Minister, DGP, Kolhan DIG, and the State Police Complaint Authority.

City SP Shivashish launched an investigation, during which the victim, her father, and brother recorded their statements at the SP office. Evidence such as WhatsApp call logs and chat messages was also submitted. The FIR was eventually registered with help from senior officers, as the Kadma police allegedly failed to cooperate during the probe.

The investigation confirmed the bribery allegations, resulting in the suspension of SI Sunil Das. Responding to the development, Ankit Anand said the action was not just a win for the victim, but also a step toward restoring public faith in the police. He also criticized the Kadma SHO for staying silent despite being aware of the complaint. Anand tweeted, “Justice delivered… Satyamev Jayate. Na khayenge, na khane denge,” reaffirming his stand against corruption.

The incident has become a strong example of accountability and transparency within the Jharkhand Police Department.
