New Delhi (IANSlife) Picasso Ceramics will offer 87 ceramic editions by Pablo Picasso in an online-only Christie’s auction which is open for bidding from 3-17 September 2020. Picasso designed 633 different ceramic editions between 1947 and 1971, with a number of variants and unique pieces resulting from these initial works.
Although he began by producing decorated utilitarian objects, such as plates and bowls, he later produced more complex forms such as pitchers and vases – their handles occasionally shaped to form facial features, or anatomical parts where they depicted animals.
Over the course of his lifetime Picasso explored a number of different ceramic techniques, experimenting with paint, playing with form, or engraving the clay’s surface. Eventually, extensive research led him to adopt two main production methods.
The first was based on the painstaking replication of an original object by hand, following its form and decoration as closely as possible. The second saw the artist create original images in dry clay moulds, transferring a design onto fresh clay.
Highlights include Grand vase aux femmes voiles (1950, estimate: �100,000-150,000), a 26- piece dinner service, Service poisson (1947, estimate: �55,000-75,000), and an earthenware pitcher, Femme du barbu (1953, estimate: �25,000-35,000). A trio of plates from the 1950s represent key motifs explored by Picasso through the ceramic medium: T�te de ch�vre profil (1952, estimate: �7,000-10,000); Hibou blanc sur fond rouge (1957, estimate: �10,000-15,000); and Jaqueline au chevalet (1956, estimate: �20,000-30,000). Prices begin at �800, offering collectors at all levels an opportunity to acquire a piece by Picasso.
