Dr Rameshwar Oraon appointed new JPCC chief

Ranchi: Former Union Minister and senior leader Rameshwar Oraon have been appointed as the new Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee Chief.

A notice regarding his appointment has been issued by AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal. Apart from Oraon, the Congress high command has also appointed former MLA Keshav Mahto Kamlesh, Jamtara MLA Irfan Ansari, JPCC media in-charge Rajesh Thakur and two others including Manas Sinha and Sanjay Paswan as working presidents of the party.

Dr Rameshwar Oraon who was elected from Lohardaga Lok Sabha seat of the state was Union Minister for Tribal Affairs in the Manmohan Singh government between 2004-2009, apart from that he has also served as the Chairman of the national ST commission. However, in the Lok Sabha polls of 2019 he was not given the ticket to contest from Lohardaga seat. His wife Ragini Minz has also served as the civil surgeon.

Senior party leaders said that appointment of Mr Oraon is part of Muslim-Tribal combination strategy of the high command as currently the leader of the legislature wing of the party is Alamgir Aalam, therefore, keeping in mind the upcoming Vidhan Sabha polls the party has opted for a tribal face as its new state head.

Rameshwar Oraon was born in Chiyanki of Palamu on February 14, 1947 and also holds a degree of PhD in economics from the Ranchi University.
