Doppler Weather Radar to be installed at Ranchi Met Centre

Ranchi: Additional director general of meteorology New Delhi D Pradhan and Director Meteorological Centre at Ranchi briefed
media on the installation of Doppler weather radar at Ranchi and advanced tools and techniques for better monitoring of severe weather events like norwester, lightning, heavy rainfall, cyclone, heatwave etc.

Dr Pradhan said that installation of c band Doppler weather radar at Ranchi has been approved and procurement process is in its final stage. He said that the radar would be installed in the premises of the Ranchi Centre during the upcoming 12 to 15 months and will be able to cover most parts of Jharkhand with a horizontal range of 250 km.

DWR radar is one of the most advanced tools for 3-dimensional monitoring of thunderstorm and short term weather forecast. He said that the installation of the radar and also utilisation of new tools and techniques will enhance the accuracy of short term
forecast significantly in terms of temporal and spatial distribution with lead time to 2-3 hours. Dr Kotal said that MET centre Ranchi is prepared for better monitoring of various disasters weather events with available advanced tools and techniques.

He said that at present DWR Patna and Kolkata are being used for severe weather monitoring and nowcast and added that in addition special products have been developed based on high-resolution satellite radar and sophisticated numerical weather prediction models for better monitoring and prediction of the thunderstorm.
