Budget Session: Government admits lots of money trapped of small investors of Jharkhand in Sahara

Ranchi: Finance Minister Rameshwar Oraon has admitted that like the whole country, Jharkhand too has a large number of small investors stuck in the Sahara group.

He said that the state government is taking it seriously and trying to get the money out and correspondence in this regard has been made with both Sahara and SEBI from the level of the state government.

Rameshwar Oraon gave this information to the House in response to the question raised by BJP MLA Naveen Jaiswal in this context.

Dr Oraon also mentioned the limitations of the government. He detailed that there are two types of companies one is chit fund companies, which are controlled by the state government, the other are listed companies like Sahara and their regulator is SEBI. He said that the state government does not have much control over it moreover this matter is also going on in the Supreme Court.

The Finance Minister said that SEBI is awaiting the court’s decision and after the order of the Supreme Court, an amount of about Rs 24 thousand crores will be returned to the investors. The minister informed so far, about Rs 138 crore of 17526 people have been returned. He said that the Finance Department is making efforts for the investors to get their stuck amount and correspondence has also been done with SEBI and Sahara Company in this regard.

Earlier, BJP MLA Naveen Jaiswal raised this matter in the calling attention motion and said that about Rs 2500 crore of about three lakh people of Jharkhand are trapped in the Sahara Parivar. This money belongs to the poor, who had deposited Rs 10-20 from their daily earnings. Naveen Jaiswal advised the government to issue a helpline number so that a data could be generated which would show how many people have deposited the amount. It was also said that the states which are ready, they are getting refunds soon. The situation is that the people who used to work in Sahara have lost their lives, he said.
