Lathi-charge & tear gas shells used as police and Youth Congress workers clash at Birsa Chowk

Ranchi, Jul 18: Birsa Chowk of the state capital turned up into a war zone as police and members of Youth Congress clashed with each other during which stones were hurled and police resorted to the use of tear gas shells and lath charge to disperse the crowd.

In the incident apart from the workers and leaders of the Youth Congress who sustained injuries, police station officer incharge of Jaggannathpur police station and Ranchi City SP Aman Kumar also sustained injuries. All the injured were later admitted in the hospital.

The Youth Congress had organized a Vidhan Sabha gherao programme against the land acquisition amendment act and were stopped at the Birsa Chowk by the police as they were marching towards the assembly. Police alleged that the members of the youth congress forcibly tried to break the barricading after which police used mild force which was retaliated by stone pelting by the Congress workers.

Later to disperse the crowd police had to fire tear gas shells after which national leader of Youth Congress Srinivasan and others were taken into custody. Ranchi City SP Aman kumar said that the agitators were asked to make peaceful protest as no one will be allowed to cross over during the session.
